This is what makes the Perfect Design of your Packaging

It should bring your product into the limelight, convey your brand, and ideally set trends: this is just a small excerpt from the checklist that package design should meet today, according to consultants and marketing gurus. Ergo: Protecting your products is no longer enough. In many cases, whether online or in-store, product packaging is the first thing a customer sees about your product. Basically, there are a few restrictions on the design of the package. However, there are some things to keep in mind, such as certain required information. This article describes what you need to consider when designing a package and how the package is eye-catching.

These are the questions you ask yourself before designing

1. What kind of product is it?

2. Who is your target group?

  • Is it a special product for men or women?
  • Are environmentally friendly people the target group?
  • Is your potential buyer’s very price sensitive?
  • Is this product for children?
  • Is the target group senior?
  • What are the needs and interests of the target group?
  • How and What Does the Target Group Use Your Product?

And, after defining your target group? Be sure to be in the position of a buyer. What can she work on? Example: Kids want a playful and colorful design. Older people are generally more likely to buy products with large, easy-to-read text on their packaging.

Anyone who buys an expensive product wants a luxurious package. If your target group is keen on special editions such as Christmas, sporting events, Easter, etc., we recommend a flexible package.

3. How does your target group buy your product?

When selling a product exclusively online, different design elements are important than when selling the product in a store.

Why? For example, a product that ships need a package that properly encloses the product so that it does not fly around or be damaged. If you want your retail store to stand out from the competition, you need to make your design stand out.

Eight most important elements of package design

# 1 Package features

In addition to protection, packages have many other features. It is important to clarify which features are in the foreground during the design and adjust the design accordingly. Is it safe transportation? Practical storage? Is it safe and easy to use? The strongest possible branding effect?

Again, it is necessary to distinguish between the function of the primary packaging (envelopes in direct contact with the product) and the function of the outer packaging (larger envelopes containing a defined number of primary packages). Of course, both packages need to be coordinated with each other to create a uniform look for the customer.

# 2 Packaging

We’ve already covered this point in relation to the required question. The shape of the package must meet the requirements of the product, target group, and product presentation. In a nutshell: Form follows function Form follows the product.

# 3 Package size

This point is also influenced by the above question. How much space should your package provide for your product and how much space does it require? Is it important to save on shipping volume and costs? Would you like to send a small test sample of another product to your customer after purchasing or ordering?

# 4 Packaging Material

The selection of materials should be adjusted primarily to the specific requirements of the product. Is it very sensitive to light? Is Moisture No-go for Your Product? How sustainable does the material need to be? What other loads does the package have to withstand?

By the way, if you’re not sure as a founder or start-up, I recommend the article “How do I find the right product package?”. Here are the answers to the five most important questions.

# 5 Ease of use

Who needs to be able to open the package easily and without tools? Children or the elderly? How airtight do I need to reseal the package? Is it possible to reuse it for other purposes? Can you tell at a glance what kind of product it is and how it is used?

# 6 Information

Even if it is an unusual design, the following information should be attached to the product packaging.

  • Net Quantity
  • Item Quantity
  • Product Origin
  • Barcode
  • Serial Number
  • Company Name and Address
  • Health Related Information (Example: Allergen)
  • Best Before Date
  • Food Ingredients and Nutritional Value

Tip: All Required on Package Once you’ve entered the information, make sure you have enough space for your logo, advertising message, application photo, or sticker. It is not uncommon for products to be turned upside down on shelves. Therefore, when designing the package, you should also plan the space for the logo and product name on the back.

# 7 Design

First and foremost, the design of the package must of course match the brand and product. To differentiate yourself from your competitors, it also makes sense to understand current design trends. Basically, there are countless techniques for packaging to create an unforgettable experience for your customers. Colors, typography, embossing, images, cutouts, special noise on opening, fragrances, and more.

# 8 Price

Depending on the amount of budget available, this factor should be included in the decision very early on. Package prices are affected by material, print type, package quantity, and quick delivery.

Pro Tip: Don’t Just Pay Attention not only to the costs of the packaging itself, but also the transport and shipping costs of your packaging. Plastic, for example, is considerably lighter than glasses or cans, which means that the costs for transport and shipping are considerably lower.
